Within the Scope of Strengthening Health Service Mechanisms for Remaining Women
Speaking at the Webinar on the Effects of Violence Against Women on Women's Health and Social Work Practices with Women Exposed to Violence, Özvarış mentioned that the main strategy in preventing gender-based inequalities is 'women's empowerment' and said: is to be integrated into the laws and to be reflected in the practices. The human rights of women are guaranteed by international conventions. Women are exposed to discrimination not only because they are women, but also because of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and disability. A rights-based approach requires treating all women equally and respectfully and not discriminating. Based on a gender sensitive perspective, violence against women can be prevented with primary, secondary and tertiary protection measures.”
Violence should be recorded
Emphasizing that violence against women causes diseases such as deterioration of physical health, pain, feeling unwell and obesity as well as its lethal consequences, Özvarış said, “Chronic pain syndrome, intestinal syndromes, gastrointestinal disorders, somatic complaints, fibromyalgia are just some of the symptoms we see. Unwanted pregnancies, unhealthy abortions and sexually transmitted diseases affect women very negatively. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the power dynamics and norms that perpetuate violence against women. Listen to the patient's story, believe him and take what he says seriously. Do not blame or judge the woman. Inform and counsel the woman so that she can make her own decision. It is of great importance to keep records of women who have been subjected to violence. It helps to remember the phenomenon or help others have the necessary information about the phenomenon. It can be used in the judicial process," he said.
